Introducing the Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF)

An index certifying the global UV protection of a lens

E-SPF indicates the overall UV protection brought by your lenses, to your eyes and to the sensitive skin around your eyes.

All lenses are not equal in terms of UV protection. It is crucial to consider UV protection parameter when choosing your visual equipment with your Eye Care Professional. With this new reference index in health care, you now have a clear and objective information regarding UV protection performance of your eyeglasses and sunglasses.

The Eye-Sun Protection Factor has been developed by Essilor and endorsed by independant expert. This is an objective rating system measuring the protection brought by both sides of a lens.

Higher is the E-SPF, higher the UV protection

		E-SPF is inspired by the protection index used to rate skincare and sunscreen products efficiency against ultraviolet rate: H igher values of E-SPF indicate greater level of spectacles UV protection. With E-SPF = 25, your eyes are 25 times better protected than without any protection. (E-SPF excludes direct eye exposure from around the lenses). This rating system is eligible for clear and photochromic eyeglasses as well as for sunglasses, with values ranked from 2 to 25 for clear lenses, and up to 50+ for sun lenses. Today, Crizal Forte ^® UV provide the best UV protection for an Essilor clear lens, with an E-SPF of 25. For corrective sun lenses, Crizal Sun UV guarantees an E-SPF of 50+

Clear eyeglasses cannot substitute sunglasses, especially during summer peak season.

Firstly because larger frames reduce the amount of UV rays entering directly into the eyes by the sides. Secondly it is a matter of visual comfort: tinted sun lenses reduce bright light, and polarized sun lenses reduce both bright light and reflected dazzling light.
